Day Three

The kids warned us that we would wake up around three a.m. because of jet lag and lost sleep. We fooled them again by rolling out about nine. It was so good to sleep in but with the altitude, sleep deficit and dry air we are still just a bit foggy headed. Today is a rest day anyway so things should be good tomorrow.

After Breakfast we took a hike to the store for supplies and just for a look see. The trail down to town is packed snow, about two hundred yards and all down hill. It was on the trip back that I had some time to think about how uniformly flat our normal lives are. Since there are not cars or public transportation, you take a backpack for a light shopping day or a sled if it is a big shopping. We did a backpack and Andy did the carrying.

The town is unique. narrow snow covered pedestrian streets with all classic Swiss architecture. We stopped at the bakers, the co-op, and, the butchers. It was very interesting to see the different brands and even the difference in packaging. Andy helped us with the Label challenge. It's more interesting than you might imagine when the products, the brands and the language are all unknowns. I always feel very bad about not knowing the language and the lady at the bakery apologized for not knowing the english word for apricot.

The kids are rounding us up for a hike out of town to a ski cafe that serves famous Strudel
desserts. Here are the pictures for the day.......so far. Pictures

Later that day

So the kids decided that we should take a little hike for some world famous apple strudel. There are huts at different spots on the mountain where the skiers can stop for a beer or a dessert. The trick is that they are up on the ski mountain. So much for our “rest day”. It was a beautiful hike but it was a very long uphill on a deep snow path. Jamie thought it was five miles but I’m sure she was exaggerating. The strudel was as advertised and Scott toured me through some local beer. Jenny and Pete had left earlier in the morning and hiked much further up the hill to ski down. I teased them about a three-hour hike for a three minute ski run. They joined us with a strudel and beer. When we left, Jenny and Pete headed off down the slopes,. Andy and Scott jumped on their sleds and went hooting off down the trail. Jamie and I did the slow trudge back as the sun went down and the snow started falling. It was beautiful. Very cold but we were warmed from the walking and didn’t mind. It’s been a good day.

  1. Are there snow shoes for rent there? Might be fun...and good exercise! (as if you're not getting enough!)
